Antibiogram Philosophies:
- Taxonomists generally fall into one of two categories: "lumpers" or
"splitters".
- Antibiogram "lumpers" publish all isolates, perhaps with a
"floor" below which isolate numbers raise statistical significance issues.
- Antibiogram "splitters" publish a restricted list of
epidemiologically significant organisms (some organisms are "constants";
others will vary by facility's service complexity, patient demographics,
etc.).
- We advocate a mediating position.
- Periodic committee reports reflect a restricted list ("splitters").
- Annual reports to the Medical Staff reflect that year's isolates, with a
floor of, perhaps, not less than 20 isolates (lumpers").
